There’s nothing more romantic than being holed up at a summer cottage for 10 days, simply to write songs. It’s the stuff dreams are made of… even if for us, there was the oh-so-real task of creating our first full-length looming over us.
Before we released our EP and started playing live as a full band, we had all the time in the world to write demos. It’s all we did! But then we started rehearsing for shows, and it wasn’t so easy anymore. Don’t get me wrong—we were stoked to be playing all these awesome shows. But we knew we had to get back into writing, and the only way to do so was to take a break and just get out of the city. So there we were, driving out with the bright lights behind us. That’s when it all came into perspective for me and the pressure started to kick in… We had obviously planned this a while ago, and there was a huge anticipation, but what if we didn’t come up with anything? What if it was terrible? What if we just wasted our time? All my fears were condensed into this insanely short period of time. Maybe it’s a sort of initiation process for musicians. Welcome to the jungle!… or the woods, in our case.
And there we were, at the cottage on a Saturday morning. We had brought pretty much all the equipment from our rehearsal space, as well as the usual cottage suspects: beer, sausages, snack mix etc. But we did make a rule to take it easy on the booze and snacks, or we really wouldn’t get anything done! We attempted a sort of routine for the next few days: get up early, go for a swim, work for a few hours, lunch, get back to work, chill, sleep. It actually worked, and we got a lot done. Okay, so I did veer off slightly one night when we were working on a completely new song… it wasn’t going anywhere, but I just wouldn’t give it up. A few beers later it was 3 a.m. and I thought I had created a complete mess. The next morning, I played it to Colin—he loved it! I think it was a bunch of happy accidents, but I also think it honestly needed that late night drunken session for it to even exist the way it does right now.
That was one of many happy accidents. Our very first cottage song came out of a random riff Colin had started playing on the guitar to test the input level of the microphones. Two hours later, it was a fully fledged song. We knew it wouldn’t always be that easy, but damn, that felt good!
We’ve never really had a set method of writing songs in Fevers. I can pretty much guarantee every song on the album will have been created in a different way to the next. And it will always be a group effort—we’re a democracy, and that will never change. The songs may originate from an individual, but by the time we are finished the album, these group of songs will be Fevers’ songs. So when the rest of the band came up to the cottage, we knew the work was only just beginning. More periods of listening and dissecting, reworking and restructuring. And then… done. I couldn’t believe it. We were done. The 10 days were up, just like that. And wouldn’t you know it, we achieved what we had set out to do. We had demoed the majority of the songs for the album, and we were happy with them… really happy. Here come the fireworks! Really. A summer cottage trip wouldn’t be complete without fireworks. And in true Fevers form, we decided to record the sound in case we wanted to use it on the record. We’re not ones to shy away from using anything and everything in our songs. As the night sky lit up and reflected back on the water, we all knew this was a significant moment.
So… just the small matter of recording the album now. Stay tuned.

Happy New Year from everyone at Fevers! We’ve had a great year, and wanted to thank you for your continued support. Here’s a photo of us ringing in the New Year at a little secret basement show to test out the new material (Photo by Hortense des Dorides).
2013 is setting out to be another awesome year for us—we’re currently in the studio working on our debut full length record. It will be released in May 2013, with a single and video preceding it. We’re so excited about the record, and can’t wait for people to hear it! We’ll be playing a lot of shows in support of it, so keep your eyes open for tour date announcements.
Looking back on 2012, we can just imagine what the new year will hold—we covered some serious ground in our first full year as a band! With the launch of our self-produced EP, Passion Is Dead, in October 2011, it felt like the world opened up to us. We had some great press from critics in Canada, the States, and Europe alike and played Ottawa Bluesfest, Tulip Festival, Capital Pride, JUNOfest, and the Festival de l’Outaouais Émergent. We even got to share the stage with artists like Plants and Animals, Dirty Projectors, Ariane Moffatt and Hotel Morphée. Perhaps our most bittersweet moment was gracing the cover of the last Ottawa XPress.
For all that and more, we want to reiterate how grateful we are for your continued support. Keep an eye out for updates on our website and social media streams.

FEVERS "Passion Is Dead (Long Live Fashion)" (video)
Exclaim! - 05/11/2012
Approached to make a clip two months ago, the group launched a funding campaign that saw local businesses and music enthusiasts contributing to get the project off the ground. The results gained the band access to a studio and crew, and the result is a simple, but fun, visual introduction to FEVERS.
FEVERS catch the promo bug, make video
Ottawa Magazine (Sound Seekers) - 05/09/2012
When it came time to make a video ahead of festival application deadlines, the band, working with start-up producer Bryan McNally, chose the tune “Passion is Dead (Long Live Fashion),” for its message — and for the challenge inherent in making a video about a song that questions the continued rise of spectacle over substance.
